Every October 1, we reflect on what it means to be Nigerian. But this year, we want to take it further and hand that question over to the people who tell our stories best: filmmakers.
Filmmakers Mart, in partnership with Rollpay Africa, is inviting Nigerian filmmakers to submit their original story ideas for the Independence Day Short Film Project. This is your chance to explore what it means to be Nigerian today, through your own lens, with your own voice.
From the submissions, three stories will be selected and awarded N3 million each in production funding. The completed films will premiere at a private industry showcase on October 1, 2025.
This is a creative challenge and a moment to own the narrative. Whether your idea is bold and provocative, tender and intimate, or playful and inventive, if it speaks to the Nigerian experience, we want to see it.
Who Can Apply
To be eligible:
- You must be a Nigerian citizen or legal resident
- Your submission must be an original story idea (no adaptations or remakes)
- Submit by July 4, 2025
- Entry is free

Why We’re Doing This
At Filmmakers Mart, we know that strong ideas deserve more than inspiration — they need execution. That’s why we’ve built a platform that helps filmmakers secure locations, permits, equipment, and trusted vendors across the continent. We’re organizing this initiative to further support filmmakers not just in telling stories but in completing them, with confidence and support.
Let’s tell better stories. Let’s tell our stories.
